1 Follow G1377 after charity, G26 and G1161 desire G2206 spiritual G4152 gifts, but G1161 rather G3123 that G2443 ye may prophesy. G4395
Wherefore, G5620 brethren, G80 covet G2206 to prophesy, G4395 and G2532 forbid G2967 not G3361 to speak G2980 with tongues. G1100
Follow G1377 peace G1515 with G3326 all G3956 men, and G2532 holiness, G38 without G5565 which G3739 no man G3762 shall see G3700 the Lord: G2962
But G1161 he that prophesieth G4395 speaketh G2980 unto men G444 to edification, G3619 and G2532 exhortation, G3874 and G2532 comfort. G3889 He that speaketh G2980 in an unknown tongue G1100 edifieth G3618 himself; G1438 but G1161 he that prophesieth G4395 edifieth G3618 the church. G1577 G1161 I would G2309 that ye G5209 all G3956 spake G2980 with tongues, G1100 but G1161 rather G3123 that G2443 ye prophesied: G4395 for G1063 greater G3187 is he that prophesieth G4395 than G2228 he that speaketh G2980 with tongues, G1100 except G1622 G1508 he interpret, G1329 that G2443 the church G1577 may receive G2983 edifying. G3619
But G1161 thou, G4771 O G5599 man G444 of God, G2316 flee G5343 these things; G5023 and G1161 follow after G1377 righteousness, G1343 godliness, G2150 faith, G4102 love, G26 patience, G5281 meekness. G4236
Well reported of G3140 for G1722 good G2570 works; G2041 if G1487 she have brought up G5044 children, if G1487 she have lodged strangers, G3580 if G1487 she have washed G3538 the saints' G40 feet, G4228 if G1487 she have relieved G1884 the afflicted, G2346 if G1487 she have diligently followed G1872 every G3956 good G18 work. G2041
But G1161 if G1437 all G3956 prophesy, G4395 and G1161 there come in G1525 one G5100 that believeth not, G571 or G2228 one unlearned, G2399 he is convinced G1651 of G5259 all, G3956 he is judged G350 of G5259 all: G3956 And G2532 thus G3779 are G1096 the secrets G2927 of his G846 heart G2588 made G1096 manifest; G5318 and G2532 so G3779 falling down G4098 on G1909 his face G4383 he will worship G4352 God, G2316 and report G518 that G3754 God G2316 is G2076 in G1722 you G5213 of a truth. G3689
Beloved, G27 follow G3401 not G3361 that which is evil, G2556 but G235 that which is good. G18 He that doeth good G15 is G2076 of G1537 God: G2316 but G1161 he that doeth evil G2554 hath G3708 not G3756 seen G3708 God. G2316
And G1161 to G1722 godliness G2150 brotherly kindness; G5360 and G1161 to G1722 brotherly kindness G5360 charity. G26
Let him eschew G1578 G575 evil, G2556 and G2532 do G4160 good; G18 let him seek G2212 peace, G1515 and G2532 ensue G1377 it. G846 For G3754 the eyes G3788 of the Lord G2962 are over G1909 the righteous, G1342 and G2532 his G846 ears G3775 are open unto G1519 their G846 prayers: G1162 but G1161 the face G4383 of the Lord G2962 is against G1909 them that do G4160 evil. G2556 And G2532 who G5101 is he that will harm G2559 you, G5209 if G1437 ye be G1096 followers G3402 of that which is good? G18
Hearken H8085 to me, ye that follow after H7291 righteousness, H6664 ye that seek H1245 the LORD: H3068 look H5027 unto the rock H6697 whence ye are hewn, H2672 and to the hole H4718 of the pit H953 whence ye are digged. H5365
He that followeth H7291 after righteousness H6666 and mercy H2617 findeth H4672 life, H2416 righteousness, H6666 and honour. H3519
And the LORD H3068 came down H3381 in a cloud, H6051 and spake H1696 unto him, and took H680 of the spirit H7307 that was upon him, and gave H5414 it unto the seventy H7657 elders: H2205 H376 and it came to pass, that, when the spirit H7307 rested H5117 upon them, they prophesied, H5012 and did not cease. H3254 But there remained H7604 two H8147 of the men H582 in the camp, H4264 the name H8034 of the one H259 was Eldad, H419 and the name H8034 of the other H8145 Medad: H4312 and the spirit H7307 rested H5117 upon them; and they were of them that were written, H3789 but went not out H3318 unto the tabernacle: H168 and they prophesied H5012 in the camp. H4264 And there ran H7323 a young man, H5288 and told H5046 Moses, H4872 and said, H559 Eldad H419 and Medad H4312 do prophesy H5012 in the camp. H4264 And Joshua H3091 the son H1121 of Nun, H5126 the servant H8334 of Moses, H4872 one of his young men, H979 answered H6030 and said, H559 My lord H113 Moses, H4872 forbid H3607 them. And Moses H4872 said H559 unto him, Enviest H7065 thou for my sake? would God that all the H5414 LORD'S H3068 people H5971 were prophets, H5030 and that the LORD H3068 would put H5414 his spirit H7307 upon them!
What G5101 shall we say G2046 then? G3767 That G3754 the Gentiles, G1484 which G3588 followed G1377 not G3361 after righteousness, G1343 have attained G2638 to righteousness, G1343 even G1161 the righteousness G1343 which G3588 is of G1537 faith. G4102

Commentary on 1 Corinthians 14 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 14
In this chapter the apostle directs them about the use of their spiritual gifts, preferring those that are best and fitted to do the greatest good.
1Cr 14:1-5
The apostle, in the foregoing chapter, had himself preferred, and advised the Corinthians to prefer, Christian charity to all spiritual gifts. Here he teaches them, among spiritual gifts, which they should prefer, and by what rules they should make comparison. He begins the chapter,
1Cr 14:6-14
In this paragraph he goes on to show how vain a thing the ostentation of speaking unknown and unintelligible language must be. It was altogether unedifying and unprofitable (v. 6): If I come to you speaking with tongues, what will it profit you, unless I speak to you by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine? It would signify nothing to utter any of these in an unknown tongue. An apostle, with all his furniture, could not edify, unless he spoke to the capacity of his hearers. New revelations, the most clear explications of old ones, the most instructive discourses in themselves, would be unprofitable in a language not understood. Nay, interpretations of scripture made in an unknown tongue would need to be interpreted over again, before they could be of any use.
1Cr 14:15-20
The apostle here sums up the argument hitherto, and,
1Cr 14:21-25
