7 And it came to pass, when Hiram H2438 heard H8085 the words H1697 of Solomon, H8010 that he rejoiced H8055 greatly, H3966 and said, H559 Blessed H1288 be the LORD H3068 this day, H3117 which hath given H5414 unto David H1732 a wise H2450 son H1121 over this great H7227 people. H5971
And he lifted up H5375 his eyes, H5869 and saw H7200 the women H802 and the children; H3206 and said, H559 Who are those H428 with thee? And he said, H559 The children H3206 which God H430 hath graciously given H2603 thy servant. H5650
Blessed H1288 be the LORD H3068 thy God, H430 which delighted H2654 in thee, to set H5414 thee on the throne H3678 of Israel: H3478 because the LORD H3068 loved H160 Israel H3478 for ever, H5769 therefore made H7760 he thee king, H4428 to do H6213 judgment H4941 and justice. H6666
Then Huram H2361 the king H4428 of Tyre H6865 answered H559 in writing, H3791 which he sent H7971 to Solomon, H8010 Because the LORD H3068 hath loved H160 his people, H5971 he hath made H5414 thee king H4428 over them. Huram H2361 said H559 moreover, Blessed H1288 be the LORD H3068 God H430 of Israel, H3478 that made H6213 heaven H8064 and earth, H776 who hath given H5414 to David H1732 the king H4428 a wise H2450 son, H1121 endued H3045 with prudence H7922 and understanding, H998 that might build H1129 an house H1004 for the LORD, H3068 and an house H1004 for his kingdom. H4438
Happy H835 are thy men, H582 and happy H835 are these thy servants, H5650 which stand H5975 continually H8548 before H6440 thee, and hear H8085 thy wisdom. H2451 Blessed H1288 be the LORD H3068 thy God, H430 which delighted H2654 in thee to set H5414 thee on his throne, H3678 to be king H4428 for the LORD H3068 thy God: H430 because thy God H430 loved H160 Israel, H3478 to establish H5975 them for ever, H5769 therefore made H5414 he thee king H4428 over them, to do H6213 judgment H4941 and justice. H6666
Pray H7592 for the peace H7965 of Jerusalem: H3389 they shall prosper H7951 that love H157 thee. Peace H7965 be within thy walls, H2426 and prosperity H7962 within thy palaces. H759
A wise H2450 son H1121 heareth his father's H1 instruction: H4148 but a scorner H3887 heareth H8085 not rebuke. H1606
Behold, I and the children H3206 whom the LORD H3068 hath given H5414 me are for signs H226 and for wonders H4159 in Israel H3478 from the LORD H3068 of hosts, H6635 which dwelleth H7931 in mount H2022 Zion. H6726
For unto us a child H3206 is born, H3205 unto us a son H1121 is given: H5414 and the government H4951 shall be upon his shoulder: H7926 and his name H8034 shall be called H7121 Wonderful, H6382 Counsellor, H3289 The mighty H1368 God, H410 The everlasting H5703 Father, H1 The Prince H8269 of Peace. Commentary on 1 Kings 5 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 5
The great work which Solomon was raised up to do was the building of the temple; his wealth and wisdom were given him to qualify him for that. In this, especially, he was to be a type of Christ, for "he shall build the temple of the Lord,' Zec. 6:12. In this chapter we have an account of the preparations he made for that and his other buildings. Gold and silver his good father had prepared in abundance, but timber and stones he must get ready; and about these we have him treating with Hiram king of Tyre.
1Ki 5:1-9
We have here an account of the amicable correspondence between Solomon and Hiram. Tyre was a famous trading city, that lay close upon the sea, in the border of Israel; its inhabitants (as should seem) were none of the devoted nations, nor ever at enmity with Israel, and therefore David never offered to destroy them, but lived in friendship with them. It is here said of Hiram their king that he was ever a lover of David; and we have reason to think he was a worshipper of the true God, and had himself renounced, though he could not reform, the idolatry of his city. David's character will win the affections even of those that are without. Here is,
