3 In G1722 these G5025 lay G2621 a great G4183 multitude G4128 of impotent folk, G770 of blind, G5185 halt, G5560 withered, G3584 waiting for G1551 the moving G2796 of the water. G5204
It is good H2896 that a man should both hope H3175 H2342 and quietly wait H1748 for the salvation H8668 of the LORD. H3068
And G2532 great G4183 multitudes G3793 came G4334 unto him, G846 having G2192 with G3326 them those that were G1438 lame, G5560 blind, G5185 dumb, G2974 maimed, G2948 and G2532 many G4183 others, G2087 and G2532 cast G4496 them G846 down G4496 at G3844 Jesus' G2424 feet; G4228 and G2532 he healed G2323 them: G846
And G2532 he entered G1525 again G3825 into G1519 the synagogue; G4864 and G2532 there was G2258 a man G444 there G1563 which had G2192 a withered G3583 hand. G5495 And G2532 they watched G3906 him, G846 whether G1487 he would heal G2323 him G846 on the sabbath day; G4521 that G2443 they might accuse G2723 him. G846 And G2532 he saith G3004 unto the man G444 which had G2192 the withered G3583 hand, G5495 Stand G1453 forth. G1519 G3319 And G2532 he saith G3004 unto them, G846 Is it lawful G1832 to do good G15 on the sabbath days, G4521 or G2228 to do evil? G2554 to save G4982 life, G5590 or G2228 to kill? G615 But G1161 they held their peace. G4623
Then G2532 Jesus G2424 answering G611 said G2036 unto them, G846 Go your way, G4198 and tell G518 John G2491 what things G3739 ye have seen G1492 and G2532 heard; G191 how G3754 that the blind G5185 see, G308 the lame G5560 walk, G4043 the lepers G3015 are cleansed, G2511 the deaf G2974 hear, G191 the dead G3498 are raised, G1453 to the poor G4434 the gospel is preached. G2097
But G1161 if G1487 we hope G1679 for that G3739 we see G991 not, G3756 then do we G553 with G1223 patience G5281 wait for G553 it.
Be patient G3114 therefore, G3767 brethren, G80 unto G2193 the coming G3952 of the Lord. G2962 Behold, G2400 the husbandman G1092 waiteth G1551 for the precious G5093 fruit G2590 of the earth, G1093 and hath long patience G3114 for G1909 it, G846 until G2193 G302 he receive G2983 the early G4406 and G2532 latter G3797 rain. G5205
And it came to pass, when king H4428 Jeroboam H3379 heard H8085 the saying H1697 of the man H376 of God, H430 which had cried H7121 against the altar H4196 in Bethel, H1008 that he put forth H7971 his hand H3027 from the altar, H4196 saying, H559 Lay hold H8610 on him. And his hand, H3027 which he put forth H7971 against him, dried up, H3001 so that he could H3201 not pull it in again H7725 to him.
Blessed H835 is the man H120 that heareth H8085 me, watching H8245 daily H3117 H3117 at my gates, H1817 waiting H8104 at the posts H4201 of my doors. H6607
Woe H1945 to the idol H457 shepherd H7473 that leaveth H5800 the flock! H6629 the sword H2719 shall be upon his arm, H2220 and upon his right H3225 eye: H5869 his arm H2220 shall be clean H3001 dried up, H3001 and his right H3225 eye H5869 shall be utterly H3543 darkened. H3543

Commentary on John 5 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 5
We have in the gospels a faithful record of all that Jesus began both to do and to teach, Acts 1:1. These two are interwoven, because what he taught explained what he did, and what he did confirmed what he taught. Accordingly, we have in this chapter a miracle and a sermon.
Jhn 5:1-16
This miraculous cure is not recorded by any other of the evangelists, who confine themselves mostly to the miracles wrought in Galilee, but John relates those wrought at Jerusalem. Concerning this observe,
Now this is all the account we have of this standing miracle; it is uncertain when it began and when it ceased. Some conjecture it began when Eliashib the high priest began the building of the wall about Jerusalem, and sanctified it with prayer; and that God testified his acceptance by putting this virtue into the adjoining pool. Some think it began now lately at Christ's birth; nay, others at his baptism. Dr. Lightfoot, finding in Josephus, Antiq. 15.121-122, mention of a great earthquake in the seventh year of Herod, thirty years before Christ's birth, supposed, since there used to be earthquakes at the descent of angels, that then the angel first descended to stir this water. Some think it ceased with this miracle, others at Christ's death; however, it is certain it had a gracious signification.
Jhn 5:17-30
We have here Christ's discourse upon occasion of his being accused as a sabbath-breaker, and it seems to be his vindication of himself before the sanhedrim, when he was arraigned before them: whether on the same day, or two or three days after, does not appear; probably the same day. Observe,
Jhn 5:31-47
In these verses our Lord Jesus proves and confirms the commission he had produced, and makes it out that he was sent of God to be the Messiah.
