1 And G2532 it came to pass, G1096 as G1722 he G846 went G2064 into G1519 the house G3624 of one G5100 of the chief G758 Pharisees G5330 to eat G5315 bread G740 on the sabbath G4521 day, that G2532 they G846 watched G2258 G3906 him. G846
And G2532 they watched G3906 him, G846 whether G1487 he would heal G2323 him G846 on the sabbath day; G4521 that G2443 they might accuse G2723 him. G846
And G1161 as G1722 he spake, G2980 a certain G5100 Pharisee G5330 besought G2065 him G846 to G3704 dine G709 with G3844 him: G846 and G1161 he went in, G1525 and sat down to meat. G377
And G2532 they watched G3906 him, and sent forth G649 spies, G1455 which should feign G5271 G1511 themselves G1438 just men, G1342 that G2443 they might take hold G1949 of his G846 words, G3056 that so G1519 they might deliver G3860 him G846 unto the power G746 and G2532 authority G1849 of the governor. G2232
The wicked H7563 watcheth H6822 the righteous, H6662 and seeketh H1245 to slay H4191 him.
They encourage H2388 themselves in an evil H7451 matter: H1697 they commune H5608 of laying H2934 snares H4170 privily; H2934 they say, H559 Who shall see H7200 them? They search out H2664 iniquities; H5766 they accomplish H8552 a diligent H2664 search: H2665 both the inward H7130 thought of every one H376 of them, and the heart, H3820 is deep. H6013
For as he thinketh H8176 in his heart, H5315 so is he: Eat H398 and drink, H8354 saith H559 he to thee; but his heart H3820 is not with thee.
For the terrible one H6184 is brought to nought, H656 and the scorner H3887 is consumed, H3615 and all that watch H8245 for iniquity H205 are cut off: H3772 That make a man H120 an offender H2398 for a word, H1697 and lay a snare H6983 for him that reproveth H3198 in the gate, H8179 and turn aside H5186 the just H6662 for a thing of nought. H8414
For I heard H8085 the defaming H1681 of many, H7227 fear H4032 on every side. H5439 Report, H5046 say they, and we will report H5046 it. All my familiars H582 H7965 watched H8104 for my halting, H6763 H6761 saying, Peradventure he will be enticed, H6601 and we shall prevail H3201 against him, and we shall take H3947 our revenge H5360 on him. But the LORD H3068 is with me as a mighty H1368 terrible one: H6184 therefore my persecutors H7291 shall stumble, H3782 and they shall not prevail: H3201 they shall be greatly H3966 ashamed; H954 for they shall not prosper: H7919 their everlasting H5769 confusion H3639 shall never be forgotten. H7911
And G1161 the scribes G1122 and G2532 Pharisees G5330 watched G3906 him, G846 whether G1487 he would heal G2323 on G1722 the sabbath day; G4521 that G2443 they might find G2147 an accusation G2724 against him. G846
The Son G5207 of man G444 is come G2064 eating G2068 and G2532 drinking; G4095 and G2532 ye say, G3004 Behold G2400 a gluttonous G5314 man, G444 and G2532 a winebibber, G3630 a friend G5384 of publicans G5057 and G2532 sinners! G268 But G2532 wisdom G4678 is justified G1344 of G575 all G3956 her G846 children. G5043 And G1161 one G5100 of the Pharisees G5330 desired G2065 him G846 that G2443 he would eat G5315 with G3326 him. G846 And G2532 he went G1525 into G1519 the Pharisee's G5330 house, G3614 and sat down to meat. G347
And G1161 as he G846 said G3004 these things G5023 unto G4314 them, G846 the scribes G1122 and G2532 the Pharisees G5330 began G756 to urge G1758 him vehemently, G1171 and G2532 to provoke G653 him G846 to speak G653 of G4012 many things: G4119 Laying wait for G1748 him, G846 and G2532 seeking G2212 to catch G2340 something G5100 out of G1537 his G846 mouth, G4750 that G2443 they might accuse G2723 him. G846
G1161 There was G2258 a man G444 of G1537 the Pharisees, G5330 named G3686 G846 Nicodemus, G3530 a ruler G758 of the Jews: G2453
For G1063 though I be G5607 free G1658 from G1537 all G3956 men, yet have I made G1402 myself G1683 servant G1402 unto all, G3956 that G2443 I might gain G2770 the more. G4119 And G2532 unto the Jews G2453 I became G1096 as G5613 a Jew, G2453 that G2443 I might gain G2770 the Jews; G2453 to them that are under G5259 the law, G3551 as G5613 under G5259 the law, G3551 that G2443 I might gain G2770 them that are under G5259 the law; G3551 To them that are without law, G459 as G5613 without law, G459 (being G5607 not G3361 without law G459 to God, G2316 but G235 under the law G1772 to Christ,) G5547 that G2443 I might gain G2770 them that are without law. G459 To the weak G772 became I G1096 as G5613 weak, G772 that G2443 I might gain G2770 the weak: G772 I am made G1096 all things G3956 to all G3956 men, that G2443 I might G4982 by all means G3843 save G4982 some. G5100
Then G1161 stood there up G450 one G5100 in G1722 the council, G4892 a Pharisee, G5330 named G3686 Gamaliel, G1059 a doctor of the law, G3547 had in reputation G5093 among all G3956 the people, G2992 and commanded G2753 to put G4160 the apostles G652 forth G1854 a G5100 little space; G1024

Commentary on Luke 14 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 14
In this chapter we have,
Luk 14:1-6
In this passage of story we find,
Luk 14:7-14
Our Lord Jesus here sets us an example of profitable edifying discourse at our tables, when we are in company with our friends. We find that when he had none but his disciples, who were his own family, with him at his table, his discourse with them was good, and to the use of edifying; and not only so, but when he was in company with strangers, nay, with enemies that watched him, he took occasion to reprove what he saw amiss in them, and to instruct them. Though the wicked were before him, he did not keep silence from good (as David did, Ps. 39:1, 2), for, notwithstanding the provocation given him, he had not his heart hot within him, nor was his spirit stirred. We must not only not allow any corrupt communication at our tables, such as that of the hypocritical mockers at feasts, but we must go beyond common harmless talk, and should take occasion from God's goodness to us at our tables to speak well of him, and learn to spiritualize common things. The lips of the righteous should then feed many. Our Lord Jesus was among persons of quality, yet, as one that had not respect of persons,
Luk 14:15-24
Here is another discourse of our Saviour's, in which he spiritualizes the feast he was invited to, which is another way of keeping up good discourse in the midst of common actions.
Luk 14:25-35
See how Christ in his doctrine suited himself to those to whom he spoke, and gave every one his portion of meat. To Pharisees he preached humility and charity. He is in these verses directing his discourse to the multitudes that crowded after him, and seemed zealous in following him; and his exhortation to them is to understand the terms of discipleship, before they undertook the profession of it, and to consider what they did. See here,
This parable is another way applicable, and may be taken as designed to teach us to begin speedily to be religious, rather than to begin cautiously; and may mean the same with Mt. 5:25, Agree with thine adversary quickly. Note,
