8 Thou tellest H5608 my wanderings: H5112 put H7760 thou my tears H1832 into thy bottle: H4997 are they not in thy book? H5612
Hear H8085 my prayer, H8605 O LORD, H3068 and give ear H238 unto my cry; H7775 hold not thy peace H2790 at my tears: H1832 for I am a stranger H1616 with thee, and a sojourner, H8453 as all my fathers H1 were.
Turn again, H7725 and tell H559 Hezekiah H2396 the captain H5057 of my people, H5971 Thus saith H559 the LORD, H3068 the God H430 of David H1732 thy father, H1 I have heard H8085 thy prayer, H8605 I have seen H7200 thy tears: H1832 behold, I will heal H7495 thee: on the third H7992 day H3117 thou shalt go up H5927 unto the house H1004 of the LORD. H3068
Then they that feared H3373 the LORD H3068 spake often H1696 one H376 to another: H7453 and the LORD H3068 hearkened, H7181 and heard H8085 it, and a book H5612 of remembrance H2146 was written H3789 before H6440 him for them that feared H3373 the LORD, H3068 and that thought H2803 upon his name. H8034
For G3754 the Lamb G721 which G3588 is in the midst G303 G3319 of the throne G2362 shall feed G4165 them, G846 and G2532 shall lead G3594 them G846 unto G1909 living G2198 fountains G4077 of waters: G5204 and G2532 God G2316 shall wipe away G1813 all G3956 tears G1144 from G575 their G846 eyes. G3788
These G3778 all G3956 died G599 in G2596 faith, G4102 not G3361 having received G2983 the promises, G1860 but G235 having seen G1492 them G846 afar off, G4207 and G2532 were persuaded of G3982 them, and G2532 embraced G782 them, and G2532 confessed G3670 that G3754 they were G1526 strangers G3581 and G2532 pilgrims G3927 on G1909 the earth. G1093
And G2532 I saw G1492 the dead, G3498 small G3398 and G2532 great, G3173 stand G2476 before G1799 God; G2316 and G2532 the books G975 were opened: G455 and G2532 another G243 book G975 was opened, G455 which G3739 is G2076 the book of life: G2222 and G2532 the dead G3498 were judged G2919 out of G1537 those things which were written G1125 in G1722 the books, G975 according to G2596 their G846 works. G2041
And Moses H4872 wrote H3789 their goings out H4161 according to their journeys H4550 by the commandment H6310 of the LORD: H3068 and these are their journeys H4550 according to their goings out. H4161 And they departed H5265 from Rameses H7486 in the first H7223 month, H2320 on the fifteenth H6240 H2568 day H3117 of the first H7223 month; H2320 on the morrow H4283 after the passover H6453 the children H1121 of Israel H3478 went out H3318 with an high H7311 hand H3027 in the sight H5869 of all the Egyptians. H4714 For the Egyptians H4714 buried H6912 all their firstborn, H1060 which the LORD H3068 had smitten H5221 among them: upon their gods H430 also the LORD H3068 executed H6213 judgments. H8201 And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 removed H5265 from Rameses, H7486 and pitched H2583 in Succoth. H4785 And they removed H5265 from Marah, H4785 and came H935 unto Elim: H362 and in Elim H362 were twelve H8147 H6240 fountains H5869 of water, H4325 and threescore and ten H7657 palm trees; H8558 and they pitched H2583 there. And they removed H5265 from Elim, H362 and encamped H2583 by the Red H5488 sea. H3220 And they removed H5265 from the Red H5488 sea, H3220 and encamped H2583 in the wilderness H4057 of Sin. H442 And they removed H5265 from Alush, H442 and encamped H2583 at Rephidim, H7508 where was no water H4325 for the people H5971 to drink. H8354 And they departed H5265 from Rephidim, H7508 and pitched H2583 in the wilderness H4057 of Sinai. H7446 And they journeyed H5265 from Rissah, H7446 and pitched H2583 in Kehelathah. H6954 And they went H5265 from Kehelathah, H6954 and pitched H2583 in mount H2022 Shapher. H6946 And they removed H5265 from Kadesh, H6946 and pitched H2583 in mount H2022 Hor, H2023 in the edge H7097 of the land H776 of Edom. H123 And Aaron H175 the priest H3548 went up H5927 into mount H2022 Hor H2023 at the commandment H6310 of the LORD, H3068 and died H4191 there, in the fortieth H705 year H8141 after the children H1121 of Israel H3478 were come out H3318 of the land H776 of Egypt, H4714 in the first H259 day of the fifth H2549 month. H2320 And Aaron H175 was an hundred H3967 and twenty H6242 and three H7969 years H8141 old H1121 when he died H4194 in mount H2022 Hor. H2023 And king H4428 Arad H6166 the Canaanite, H3669 which dwelt H3427 in the south H5045 in the land H776 of Canaan, H3667 heard H8085 of the coming H935 of the children H1121 of Israel. H6325 And they departed H5265 from Punon, H6325 and pitched H2583 in Oboth. H88 And they departed H5265 from Oboth, H88 and pitched H2583 in Ijeabarim, H5863 in the border H1366 of Moab. H4124 And they departed H5265 from Iim, H5864 and pitched H2583 in Dibongad. H1769 And they removed H5265 from Dibongad, H1769 and encamped H2583 in Almondiblathaim. H4124 And the LORD H3068 spake H1696 unto Moses H4872 in the plains H6160 of Moab H4124 by Jordan H3383 near Jericho, H3405 saying, H559 Speak H1696 unto the children H1121 of Israel, H3478 and say H559 unto them, When ye are passed over H5674 Jordan H3383 into the land H776 of Canaan; H3667 Then ye shall drive out H3423 all the inhabitants H3427 of the land H776 from before H6440 you, and destroy H6 all their pictures, H4906 and destroy H6 all their molten H4541 images, H6754 and quite pluck down H8045 all their high places: H1116 And ye shall dispossess H3423 the inhabitants of the land, H776 and dwell H3427 therein: for I have given H5414 you the land H776 to possess H3423 it. And ye shall divide H5157 the land H776 by lot H1486 for an inheritance H5157 among your families: H4940 and to the more H7227 ye shall give the more H7235 inheritance, H5159 and to the fewer H4592 ye shall give the less H4591 inheritance: H5159 every man's inheritance shall be in the place where his lot H1486 falleth; H3318 according to the tribes H4294 of your fathers H1 ye shall inherit. H5157 But if ye will not drive out H3423 the inhabitants H3427 of the land H776 from before H6440 you; then it shall come to pass, that those which ye let remain H3498 of them shall be pricks H7899 in your eyes, H5869 and thorns H6796 in your sides, H6654 and shall vex H6887 you in the land H776 wherein ye dwell. H3427 Moreover it shall come to pass, that I shall do H6213 unto you, as I thought H1819 to do H6213 unto them.
By faith G4102 Abraham, G11 when he was called G2564 to go out G1831 into G1519 a place G5117 which G3739 he should after G3195 receive G2983 for G1519 an inheritance, G2817 obeyed; G5219 and G2532 he went out, G1831 not G3361 knowing G1987 whither G4226 he went. G2064
In journeyings G3597 often, G4178 in perils G2794 of waters, G4215 in perils G2794 of robbers, G3027 in perils G2794 by G1537 mine own countrymen, G1085 in perils G2794 by G1537 the heathen, G1484 in perils G2794 in G1722 the city, G4172 in perils G2794 in G1722 the wilderness, G2047 in perils G2794 in G1722 the sea, G2281 in perils G2794 among G1722 false brethren; G5569
When they went H1980 from one nation H1471 to another, from one kingdom H4467 to another H312 people; H5971 He suffered H3240 no man H120 to do them wrong: H6231 yea, he reproved H3198 kings H4428 for their sakes;
My friends H7453 scorn H3887 me: but mine eye H5869 poureth out H1811 tears unto God. H433
And David H1732 said H559 in his heart, H3820 I shall now perish H5595 one H259 day H3117 by the hand H3027 of Saul: H7586 there is nothing better H2896 for me than that H3588 I should speedily H4422 escape H4422 into the land H776 of the Philistines; H6430 and Saul H7586 shall despair H2976 of me, to seek H1245 me any more in any coast H1366 of Israel: H3478 so shall I escape H4422 out of his hand. H3027
David H1732 therefore departed H3212 thence, and escaped H4422 to the cave H4631 Adullam: H5725 and when his brethren H251 and all his father's H1 house H1004 heard H8085 it, they went down H3381 thither to him. And every one H376 that was in distress, H4689 and every one H376 that was in debt, H5378 and every one H376 that was discontented, H4751 H5315 gathered H6908 themselves unto him; and he became a captain H8269 over them: and there were with him about four H702 hundred H3967 men. H376 And David H1732 went H3212 thence to Mizpeh H4708 of Moab: H4124 and he said H559 unto the king H4428 of Moab, H4124 Let my father H1 and my mother, H517 I pray thee, come forth, H3318 and be with you, till I know H3045 what God H430 will do H6213 for me. And he brought H5148 them before H6440 the king H4428 of Moab: H4124 and they dwelt H3427 with him all the while H3117 that David H1732 was in the hold. H4686 And the prophet H5030 Gad H1410 said H559 unto David, H1732 Abide H3427 not in the hold; H4686 depart, H3212 and get H935 thee into the land H776 of Judah. H3063 Then David H1732 departed, H3212 and came H935 into the forest H3293 of Hareth. H2802

Commentary on Psalms 56 Matthew Henry Commentary
Psalm 56
It seems by this, and many other psalms, that even in times of the greatest trouble and distress David never hung his harp upon the willow-trees, never unstrung it or laid it by; but that when his dangers and fears were greatest he was still in tune for singing God's praises. He was in imminent peril when he penned this psalm, at least when he meditated it; yet even then his meditation of God was sweet.
How pleasantly may a good Christian, in singing this psalm, rejoice in God, and praise him for what he will do, as well as for what he has done.
To the chief musician upon Jonath-elem-rechokim, Michtam of David, when the Philistines took him in Gath.
Psa 56:1-7
David, in this psalm, by his faith throws himself into the hands of God, even when he had by his fear and folly thrown himself into the hands of the Philistines; it was when they took him in Gath, whither he fled for fear of Saul, forgetting the quarrel they had with him for killing Goliath; but they soon put him in mid of it, 1 Sa. 21:10, 11. Upon that occasion he changed his behaviour, but with so little ruffle to his temper that then he penned both this psalm and the 34th. This is called Michtam-a golden psalm. So some other psalms are entitled, but this has something peculiar in the title; it is upon Jonath-elem-rechokim, which signifies the silent dove afar off. Some apply this to David himself, who wished for the wings of a dove on which to fly away. He was innocent and inoffensive, mild and patient, as a dove, was at this time driven from his nest, from the sanctuary (Ps. 84:3), was forced to wander afar off, to seek for shelter in distant countries; there he was like the doves of the valleys, mourning and melancholy; but silent, neither murmuring against God nor railing at the instruments of his trouble; herein a type of Christ, who was as a sheep, dumb before the shearers, and a pattern to Christians, who, wherever they are and whatever injuries are done them, ought to be as silent doves. In this former part of the psalm,
Psa 56:8-13
Several things David here comforts himself with in the day of his distress and fear.
